CS Freshie Week welcomed the freshmen for academic year 2011-2012. Held from June 27 to July 1, the week-long event celebrated with the theme, Fiesta. Activities such as the CS Org Fair, activities sponsored by CS organizations and the second annual Mr. & Ms. FreCShie were all laid out for the new members of the student body.

Freshie Week Kickoff: Org Fair

Held last June 27 at the Math Walk, the Freshie Week started with the annual CS Org Fair. Different organizations under the College of Science manned booths along the Math building, hoping to catch the freshmen’s attention with their props, games, and activities.

From nine in the morning to twelve noon, the Association of Biology Majors, Association of Chemical Major Enthusiasts, Chemical Society, College of Science Chorale, Geological Society, Marine Biology Society, Mathematics Club, Mathematics Majors’ Circle, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Society, Pre-Medical Honor Society, Pre-Medical Society, Scientia and Zoological Society all had their sign-up sheets ready for freshmen interested to join their ranks.

Joining in on the fun was C2, whose booth even had its own tent. An advertisement for their new Facebook Page, their booth invited both freshmen and upperclassmen to “like” their fan page in order to participate in the raffle. Laptops with broadband dongles were supplied for the students. Raffle prizes included lanyards, folders, fans, and, their grand prize, 1GB USBs shaped as C2 bottles.

Org Activities for Freshmen

CS organizations did their part in welcoming the freshmen by sponsoring games and other activities from June 28 to 30. These were set-up at different venues in and around the CS complex.

On July 28, the Chemical Society’s Pabitin activity, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Society’s Hoop Shoot, Marine Biological Society’s Philippine Mini Games and Mathematics Majors Circle’s Putukan ng Lobo filled the day. These activities were then followed on July 30 by the Geology Majors Society’s Sa-Poll ng UP as well as the Association of Chemistry Majors & Enthusiasts and Physics Association’s Habulan Biik. From July 28 to 30, Agham Youth and Geological Society prepared a photo booth and a Shoot me Baby, One More Time! activity, respectively.

The activities were all donned with colorful booths and props—evident with the week’s theme. Aside from bonding with fellow freshmen, the new members of the CS student body were also able to familiarize themselves with the different locations of the CS complex through the org-sponsored activities.

The Second Annual Mr. & Ms. FreCShie Contest

Cheers and screams rang out from the audience of the second Mr & Ms FreCShie contest, held on July 1 at the National Institute of Physics Research Auditorium, as freshman representatives from each of the College of Science’s Institutes competed for the title and for other various awards.

The competition itself had a fiesta theme, following the CS’s Freshie Week theme, and was comprised of three parts. A Sagala was first of the events, where the contestants “strut their stuff” in formal and fiesta attire. A talent portion soon followed, where the contestants showed off their amazing abilities. A Question & Answer portion concluded the competition, where contestants had to answer a few of the judges’ questions as well as a few from the emcees.

Three judges graded each representative pairs during each of the competition’s portions and based the winners from said grades. Additionally, institute attendance and number of PET bottles given by each institute were also added to the computation of scores.

The winners are as follows:

Best Dressed: Chemistry
Most Photogenic: Mathematics
Most Talented: Molecular Biology & Biotechnology
People's Choice: Molecular Biology & Biotechnology
2nd Runner Up: Physics1st Runner Up: ChemistryMr. & Ms. FreCShie: Molecular Biology & Biotechnology

The College of Science Freshie Week is an annual activity headed by the CS Student Council in partnership with CS Organizations. This year’s CS Freshie Week was sponsored by BIC, Carefree and C2.
